One of the oldest cities in Russia, Yelets stands out through its favorable geographic position, long-standing industrial sites, and rich cultural and historic heritage.

On 8 October 2007, the Russian President issued a decree to bestow the honorable title of City of Military Glory to Yelets for 900 years of its service for the good of Russia.

Located 77 km from Lipetsk and 350 km from Moscow on the banks of the Bystraya Sosna River (a right tributary of the Don), modern Yelets is a cultural and industrial center, as well as the second largest and most important city in the Lipetsk Region.
Yelets is a major railway hub connecting Lipetsk, Stary Oskol, Orel, Moscow, and Lebedyan. The M4 Don federal highway is passing through the city, and the Yamburg gas pipeline ends in Yelets.

In 2022, the permanent population of the city averaged 98,070. In terms of population density (1,403.8 people per sq m), Yelets ranks second in the Lipetsk Region.

Socio-economic indicators

Yelets natural resources include deposits of limestone mined for flux, process lime, and construction stone.

All mineral deposits are operational. Olshansky Karier, Lavsky Karier, and Gornyak are the city’s three mining companies producing crushed stone and sand.

The city’s economic potential also rests on local manufacturing companies. The leading manufacturers are Energia, YeletsGidroAgregat, Gidroprivod, Agrosnabsakhar, JTI Yelets, Kolos, Eletsizvest, Prozhektornye Ugli, Yelets Medical Manufacturing Company, Yelets Meat Processing Plant, and Yelets Lace Folk Craft Factory, which sell their products both in and outside Russia.

Yelets accounts for over 88% of the total output.
